sticke alt

by Donavan

Mike Voigt and I brewed up three batches of beer over the weekend. All batches were made with a common mash (meaning all the grain was mashed in the same vessel). We ran off about 10 gallons for the B.E.E.R. club Oktoberfest coming up in early September. It’s a stronger Altbier, what’s called Sticke Alt. The OG for that one is about 1.060, so the potential alcohol will put it in the 7% ABV range depending on the level of attenuation. Stickes are usually around 6.5% ABV.

We brewed our Sticke to be on the reddish side and did everything we could to make sure this beer would be intensely malty. Three pounds of CaraRed went into the mash as did 4 pounds of Melanoidin. The CaraRed should contribute to the color as well as those blackcurrant fruit flavors. We hopped with Perle for bittering and Mt Hood for the flavor and aroma.

I’ve never seen a commercial example of Sticke Alt stateside, so we’re just going by the style guidelines.

I’ll tell you about our other beers tomorrow.

Make sure you put this on your calendar: there will be LIBME general meeting this Thursday, August 28th at 7:30 pm at the Farmingdale Croxley’s. See you there.

heavyweight stickenjab - no longer brewed was a great beer.

The Southampton Secret seems more like a regular Alt to me, even though they call it “sticke”. RIP, Heavyweight.

Shhhh its not called Secret Ale anymore :P

…and why do you think they changed the name to Southampton Alt? The ABV is 5.1% which is more in line with altbeir (albeit on the upper end of the BJCP stated range). I think a true sticke alt should be clocking in at around 6.5%.

It can’t be called Secret if everyone keeps talking about it!

Heavyweight’s Perkuno’s Hammer was reborn as Victory Baltic Thunder.

Defiant brewing in Pearl River offers some tasty brews.
