Birth of a Craft Beer Bar

Back in May of 2007, Deks installed a twelve tap system and expanded their bottle selection to about 50 craft and imported beers. The tap system featured Maudite and Southampton Double White. The current line-up (as of September 2007) included Sixpoint's Brownston, Hacker-Pschorr Edelhel Lager, Fuller's ESB, and Crop Circle.

Dean and Kevin have been hosting beer dinners at Deks once a month (usually on a Wednesday evening). For $30 you can sample five craft beers that have been paired with five appetizers. It's a great time. Call at any time to reserve your spot for the next dinner. I'll be there and I'll be talking about the beers.

We've also started another tradition (I hope): Firkin Friday. Right now we (and I say "we" because Deks is my local pub and one is allowed to speak in a proprietary manner about one's local) are doing one cask per month on a Friday night (typically the first Friday of the month). As the the interest in craft beer grows on the North Shore and people get more excited about cask conditioned ale, we hope we'll be able to sustain a couple of regular casks at Deks as well as the monthly guest cask.

Review: 19 February 2007

One of the best restaurants on the North Shore of Long Island, Deks upgraded their taproom in May 2007 and began serving craft beer on a twelve tap system. They feature an ever changing selection of local and American craft beers, including Southampton, Sixpoint, Blue Point, Troegs, Crop Circle, as well as international favorites.

Once a month they do a cask night with a gravity fed firkin of real ale up on the bar (so far this event has been the first Friday of each month). The last firkin (Jan 2007) feature Oakham Bishop's Farewell from the Oakham Ales in Peterborough, England.

If you are into beer and food pairing, every third Wednesday evening Deks stages of beer dinner where five craft and imported beers are paired with specially selected dishes. Local beer enthusiasts (one a BJCP judge) introduce and describe the beers.

The cellaring and refrigeration capacity is being expanded to accommodate an growing list of craft beer in the bottle. As of Feb 2007 Deks offers 75 different bottled beers, such as Rochefort 6, Brooklyn Local 1, Rodenbach, Boon Gueuze, Kwak, Westmalle Tripel, etc. [posted to beermapping.com]
