Donavan's Review: January 25, 2008

Last June I visited Big Z Beverage in Huntington (1675 East Jericho Tpk., 631-499-3479). I had heard about Big Z and how it was a good beer store, so I had already reserved a spot in the Long Island Craft Beer Guide for Big Z when Mark Tuchman contacted me and asked if I wouldn't come out and check out his store and give him my opinion of his operation from the beer geek perspective. The result was my little essay called "Beer Store Observations". I should have followed that up with a real review of Mark's Big Z; it's a bit late, but here it is.

A beer store has been located at 1675 East Jericho Turnpike in Huntington for years. For many (most?) of those years it's been known as Big Z Beverage. (I was told recently that twenty or twenty-five years ago, the beer store in that location had a different name which I stupidly didn't write down.) Evidently, in times past there was a flesh and blood Big Z, the proprietor of the eponymous shop. But now Big Z, the man, has moved on, and the new owner of Big Z, the shop, is Mark Tuchman.

Mark's story, in brief, is that he was in life's fast lane with a job in Manhattan financial sector. He left all that to follow his dream of being a small business owner, so he quit Manhattan and brought himself and his family to Huntington.

Mark is new to the craft beer world. He's eager to learn and he wants to turn Big Z into a retail outlet with one of the best craft beer selections on the Island. He's well on his way with an excellent coverage of American craft beer and imports from Belgium, Germany, and England.
